International Mechanism to Counter Unlawful Expropriation
An IAE initiative to document unlawfully seized assets, protect owners’ rights, and help prevent the laundering or resale of such property.
The Problem
The unlawful seizure of private property and subsequent dealings in the assets affect owners’ rights and create a risk that the property may be legitimized or resold.
Proposed Mechanism
IAE proposes documenting expropriation cases in an international register, establishing information about owners, participants, and beneficiaries, and submitting materials to international institutions for expert review.
The initiative seeks to support the restoration of violated rights and access to compensation, promote accountability for those involved, and help prevent the further circulation of unlawfully seized assets.
Objective
Develop a coordinated international approach to documenting such cases and protecting owners’ legitimate rights.
